CAMP BACK IN SESSION AT CAMP STEVENS; FIRE MOVES FURTHER AWAY FROM FACILITY
Although the Pines fire near Julian, California, has flared up in new areas, it continues to move away from Camp Stevens and the town, and is heading into the desert area, according to camp staff members.
Camp Stevens is holding its regular session this week. Campers evacuated last week should call the camp registrar at 818-366-9264 as soon as possible if they would like to attend one of the remaining sessions this summer. Limited spaces are available.Camp Stevens is a shared facility and institution of the Diocese of Los Angeles and the Diocese of San Diego.

BISHOP BORSCH ADDS VOICE TO CALL FOR SANTA MONICA LIVING WAGE
In protest of alleged retaliation against workers who have supported the Living Wage Ordinance, the Rt. Rev. Frederick Borsch, retired Bishop of Los Angeles, was one of several local religious leaders who spoke out at a vigil today at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel about the ordinance, which will be on the Santa Monica city ballot in November.
Bishop Borsch, the Rev. Richard Gillett, diocesan social justice
minister, and ministers from Methodist, Roman Catholic, First African
Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Unitarian churches, and
rabbis and lay leaders from several synagogues were among the 22 religious and civic leaders who signed a letter to hotel management, demanding a meeting to discuss the allegations.
Two hotel employees who have worked for passage of the ordinance have been fired, and others have been given warnings. The Living Wage Ordinance is intended to help ensure that workers can earn enough to support their families and provide them with health insurance, and protect them from retaliation by management.
PRAYER SERVICES WILL MARK 'YEAR'S MIND' OF SEPT. 11 TERROR ATTACKS
A Service of Prayer and Remembrance on the Year's Mind of the Sept. 11, 2001, Terror Attacks is scheduled for 6am on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles, the Center's Provost, the Very Rev. Ernesto Medina, has announced. The service will adapt and incorporate the Office of Morning Prayer during a time frame recalling the early morning plane-crash disasters in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. Los Angeles Bishop J. Jon Bruno will join Medina in hosting the service, which will be followed by a light breakfast reception. All are invited.

HILLSIDES OPENS 'POWERUP' METRO FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAM AT CATHEDRAL CENTER
Hillsides Home for Children, an institution of the Diocese of Los Angeles
for abused and abandoned children, invites the diocesan community to the grand opening of its new Metro Family Support Program at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul in Echo Park on Thursday, August 8, 11am-noon. The program has been selected as a PowerUP site. PowerUp is a program that enables schools and community centers to provide underserved individuals with the necessary computer and technical skills needed to succeed.

APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY FOR MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP WILL BE OFFERED SEPTEMBER 9-11 IN ENCINO
The Rev. Dr. Rob Voyle will offer an Appreciative Inquiry workshop at Holy Spirit Retreat Center, Encino, on Sept. 9-11 (ending at noon on Sept. 11).
Participants will learn how to use Appreciative Inquiry to empower congregations to discover the life giving factors and values, that enable congregations to survive through difficult and good times and to build strategic plans based on these factors. At this workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn Appreciative Inquiry process by conducting an appreciative review of their own ministries.
This will be the last time that the Appreciative Inquiry program will be
offered in Southern California until 2004. For program information and

'TOMORROW'S WOMAN' CONFERENCE TO CONSIDER 'LIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE'
The Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Los Angeles will present the annual Tomorrow's Woman Conference on Saturday, Oct. 12, at St. Edmund's Church, 1175 San Gabriel Blvd., San Marino. The day-long event, titled "Living Under the Influence. . ." will begin with registration at 9am and end at about 3.30pm.
Under the leadership of the Rev. Elizabeth Habecker, rector of St.
Mark's, Downey, participants will hear presentations on the influences of culture, church and ministry in their lives. Small-group discussions will be led by several prominent women priests. During the day, the conference will celebrate the ministries of Habecker and of the Very Rev. Victoria Hatch, who both celebrate the 25th anniversary of their ordination this year.
The conference will also include a youth program and child care. The
cost of $15 for adults, $10 for youth and $5 for children in child care
includes lunch. The day will end with Eucharist.

OCTOBER WORKSHOPS TO FOCUS ON 'MAKING THE CHURCH A SAFE PLACE' FREE OF SEXUAL MISCONDUCT
On behalf of the Diocese of Los Angeles, the Rev. Michael Bamberger will offer two separate workshops on October 19, 2002, at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, providing guidelines in preventing child abuse, sexual exploitation and sexual harassment for the protection of parishioners, lay employees, volunteers and clergy.
Child Abuse Prevention Workshop, 9am-12noon. This workshop will
offer guidelines in child abuse prevention, detection and child abuse
reporting guidelines as mandated by law. The workshop is intended for all clergy, lay employees and volunteers who supervise youth and children's activities, and who have not already completed an authorized training program of this kind.
Sexual Misconduct Prevention Workshop, 1pm-4pm. This workshop will focus on issues of sexual harassment and exploitation. It will cover
guidelines for prevention of misconduct in all pastoral relationships,
covering healthy boundaries, high-risk situations, the abuse of power,
accountability, ethical and theological concerns, and diocesan policies and procedures for insuring safety in our churches and institutions. This
workshop is intended for all clergy, lay employees and volunteers who have not already completed an authorized training program of this kind. This includes paid educators, staff musicians, managers of staff, and all
volunteer pastoral care providers (lay eucharistic visitors, ministers,
counselors).

DAY OF REFLECTION IN HUNTINGTON BEACH WILL FOCUS ON ISSUES OF CONCERN TO GAYS AND LESBIANS, THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS
"Following the Yellow Brick Road to Emmaus" is the theme of a day of reflection being offered by St. Wilfrid's, Huntington Beach, on Saturday, Sept. 7. Sponsored by the parish's gay and lesbian ministry and led by the Rev. Canon Mark Kowalewski, diocesan canon for theology, formation and deployment, the retreat will include discussion and meditation on Biblical texts of concern to gays and lesbians. Participants are asked to bring their own Bibles. The retreat, which is open to everyone, begins with registration, donuts and coffee at 8:45, and concludes at 2pm. NEW EDITOR OF MS. MAGAZINE TO SPEAK ABOUT WOMEN WAR CORRESPONDENTS AT FORUM IN PASADENA ON SEPT. 8
Tracy Wood, new editor-in-chief of Ms. Magazine, will speak on "Spies,
Lovers and Prisoners of War: From Vietnam to Afghanistan" from 10.15 to 11am on Sunday, Sept. 8, in the Forum at All Saints Church. Wood, who is a vestry member at St. Andrew's, Fullerton, will talk about being one of the first women correspondents in Vietnam and her knowledge of the current plight of women in Afghanistan. She is co-author of a book, to be released this month by Random House, titled War Torn: Stories from the Women Who Covered Vietnam. She will sign books, which will be available for purchase, for a limited time following the program.
Wood has worked as a combat correspondent for United Press International (UPI), acting bureau chief for UPI in Cambodia, news editor in Hong Kong/Macao, and foreign correspondent for UPI throughout Asia. She returned to the United States and worked as an investigative reporter for the Los Angeles Times for 17 years. The first issue of Ms. Magazine she produced as editor will be on newstands in October.
ORDER OF ST. LUKE CONTINUES TO OFFER HEALING PRAYER SERVICES IN SAN BERNARDINO
The Order of St. Luke (OSL) Healing Ministry continues its monthly service of prayer and the laying-on of hands for healing at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in San Bernardino. All interested in the ministry of healing prayer are invited to participate. The next service will be on Monday, September 9, 7pm. In subsequent months, healing services will be on the third Monday at 7pm.
Representatives from area parishes are now studying the OSL course,

YOUTH SAFETY FAIR IN LA VERNE ON SEPT. 28 TO FEATURE HANDS IN HEALING TRAVELERS, COMMUNITY RESOURCES
In reaction to recent tragic events and to its concern for the well-being of children in its community, St. John's Church, La Verne, will host a Youth Safety Fair on Saturday, Sept. 28, 9am-2pm. The church especially invites area schoolchildren and youth groups to participate.
Deanery 6 youth coordinator Sara Clinehens and other members of the Hands in Healing delegation that recently toured the United States on a mission to prevent violence, will attend to discuss concerns about violence with participants.
Also at the fair, parents will be able to have their children photographed and fingerprinted for identification; children will be able to investigate real fire trucks and police cars, and take part in a "Bike Fun Run" emphasizing bicycle safety. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will conduct workshops for parents and children on how to prevent child abuse and abduction. Other displays will address water and medical safety, sports safety, and other topics.
Young people who attend will receive one raffle ticket when they register, and additional tickets at each booth or event they visit. Raffle
prizes are being donated by local merchants. Other participating organizations include the La Verne police and fire departments, the Humane Society, AAA, and Southern California Edison Co.

St. Mary's Retreat House, Santa Barbara will offer a musical retreat titled "Musical Meditations in the Time of War" on September 13-15.
